HEATING · PLANNING GUIDE

Planning boiler and radiator upgrades together

Prepare the information an installer needs to assess hot water demand, radiator output, pipework access and heating paperwork.

Record symptoms before choosing equipment

List rooms that are difficult to heat and when the problem occurs. Record the current boiler model, the number of bathrooms and whether showers or taps are used at the same time. Tell the installer about planned extensions, new room layouts or insulation changes.

A cold room is a symptom, not a diagnosis of an undersized radiator. Ask for an assessment of the room and system before buying a replacement or assuming a new boiler will solve it.

Compare radiator output at the intended temperature

Radiator output varies with its design, size and the heating system’s water temperature. Ask the installer to compare the room’s heat requirement with output at the proposed operating conditions, rather than comparing dimensions or catalogue figures alone.

For each replacement, check pipe connection spacing, valve space, weight when full and wall support. Mark planned furniture and cabinets on the room sketch so the proposed position remains accessible.

Ask for a heating installation schedule

List the boiler work, radiator changes and repairs to the room’s finishes separately. Identify which parts of the existing system will remain.

  • Boiler model, location and controls
  • Radiator models, positions and valves
  • Pipework changes and access beneath floors or behind walls
  • System preparation, old equipment removal and surface repairs
  • Expected heating and hot water interruptions
  • Installer’s setup records, instructions and warranty responsibilities

Check who does the gas work

Gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for the relevant category of work. Check the ID card before work begins; registration details and work categories are not interchangeable.

Confirm who will handle any required building regulations notification and provide the certificate. Arrange pipework access before new flooring or cabinets are finished, and keep installation records with the equipment instructions.
